It’s been a while since we’ve taken a look at ways to find interesting people to follow on Twitter , but in that time, a lot of great new ways have emerged.
, but in that time, a lot of great new ways have emerged. While you likely have a solid list of people you’re already following, Twitter, by its very nature, provides an endless supply of interesting and engaging Twitter accounts just waiting to be discovered.
Whether it’s finding interesting people to follow based on location, influence, topic, or even by who your other friends are following and retweeting, there’s a little something in here for everyone.
MagicRecs
If you use Twitter on your smartphone, you might have received a notification about someone a lot of your friends have suddenly followed, or a specific tweet they’ve retweeted. Twitter has recently announced the featureon its blog, explaining it as “personalized recommendations when multiple people in your network follow the same user or favorite or retweet the same Tweet.”
Even if you don’t use the official Twitter mobile app, there’s no reason you can’t get in on the action.
Following the Twitter account @ MagicRecsmeans you can get all those recommendations via direct message. That’s literally all you have to do. After you’ve followed the account, you’ll start receiving recommendations for people to follow or tweets to read, all as direct messages. You can also customize your recommendations — find out how here.
Twitter’s Who to Follow
Another way which Twitter itself offers is right on your Twitter home page. If you launch Twitter on the web, you’ll see a list of recommendations of who to follow. More often than not, these users are followed by people you already follow. You can view the complete list, as well as a list of popular accounts, divided by category.
Nearby Tweets
Prefer to discover other Twitter users in your area? You can use Nearby Tweets to do just that. The site automatically detects your location, and will display a stream of recent tweets coming from that area. You can also search for specific cities or countries, if you want to look for Twitter users in specific locations that aren’t necessarily near you. You can further refine your results by displaying tweets from people in a specific location using a keyword search.
WeFollow
If you’re looking for recommendations based on a specific topic, look no further than WeFollow. After searching for a specific topic, you can further refine your results by location, and by the users’ “prominence score.” WeFollow explains the prominence score as “how established someone is in the interests they care about.” They calculate this by seeing who else is following that person, and how prominent they are. You can also add yourself to the WeFollow directory.
Topsy
Topsy, a service which has let you search Twitter since its launch, is another interesting way to discover people to follow. Normally used to search for hashtags or topics, there’s no reason you can’t put the data to good use for finding new people. If you search for a specific topic or hashtag, you can further narrow down those results to display only tweets from “influencers,” as well as narrowing results down by language or a specific time period.

Twtrland
Twtrlandis another solid site for anyone looking to expand their Twitter network. Searching by name or skill, you can further refine your results by location, by specific sub-skills within that topic, and by the user’s influence — celebrities, power users, casual users, or novices. You can drill down further by age or gender. With the free version of Twtrland, however, you can only see the first 50 results. If you want to see more, you’re going to have to upgrade to pro, which will set you back at least $19.99 a month.
